'Sherlock' Christmas Special news: Official trailer is out; special takes on a darker tone

The stage is set for what promises to be a fun Christmas romp for Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson as a trailer for the "Sherlock" Christmas Special has just been unveiled.

Fans were given their first glimpse of what the BBC special would look like during the San Diego Comic-Con last July. At the time, show creators Steven Moffatt and Sue Vertue promised that it would take viewers back to Victorian London, and from the looks of the trailer, they have done just that.

In the much-too-short trailer for the upcoming one-off Christmas special, Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) are in the era that author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle originally wrote the stories in.

The clip starts with Holmes telling Watson that "the stage is set. The curtain rises. We are ready to begin" before they rush off to a new adventure. Fans see familiar faces in an unfamiliar setting. There are glimpses of what might be a cult with pointy hats reminiscent of the KKK, horse-drawn carriages, Watson and his mustache and, of course, Sherlock with his iconic pipe, cape and deerstalker cap.

The clip even hints that the cap in question might be something that Watson has pushed Sherlock to do as he tells him, "You're Sherlock Holmes, wear the damn hat."

Plot-wise, not much is revealed here. However, it has been reported that this special is darker than the other seasons, literally and figuratively, and not just because of all the candlelight that's prevalent in almost every scene.

During his talk at the Television Critics Association press tour, Moffat mentioned that ghost stories are told better in a Victorian setting and this special gives them the opportunity to tell a scary one.

The "Sherlock" special also gives Cumberbatch and Martin the opportunity to play their characters in a classical setting. It places them in the same distinguished company as Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, actors who have played Sherlock and Watson in classical and modern adaptations.

There's no premiere date set yet for the "Sherlock" Christmas TV special, although some fans are hoping for it to be shown in theaters as well. That might be a bit hard to pull off but what is certain is that the show will be aired in December on "Masterpiece" on PBS in the U.S. and on the BBC One in the U.K.
