'Sherlock' season 4 news, air date: New trailer teases Sherlock's emotional side; finale to play in cinemas

The "Sherlock" fan base is freaking out. With a new trailer out, fans have gone into overdrive to figure out one particular scene from the preview: To whom does Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) say "I love you?"
The latest trailer, which only spans a little under 50 seconds, teases what's to come — including Toby Jones' villainous Culverton Smith. One scene shows a burning house as a man, presumably Mycroft (Mark Gatiss), stands outside and watches. The clip features a darker tone, which is indicative that this season is going to be different from past installments. It also echoes what the previous teaser pointed out: "It's not a game anymore."
Exciting and dramatic scenes are interspersed with Jones' character delivering a line. "What's the very worst thing you can do to your very best friends? Tell them your darkest secret," Culverton says menacingly.
But the most intriguing scene of them all comes at the very end. Sherlock is standing in the middle, with John (Martin Freeman) and Mycroft on either side. "I love you," the clever detective says as he stares into the camera.
It is unknown whom Sherlock is addressing at this point, but fans have already begun to speculate. One fan in the comments section believes that Sherlock may be saying those words because he is being forced to kill one of the two men standing in the room with him, while another posits that it could be a code of some sort. Needless to say, "Sherlock" fans are counting the days until the premiere of season 4.
As previously reported, the first episode of "Sherlock" season 4 will air on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, with subsequent episodes premiering every Sunday. The fourth season will start with "The Six Thatchers," followed by "The Lying Detective." The final episode, titled "The Final Problem," will air on Jan. 15.
However, according to Entertainment Weekly, "The Final Problem" will also hit theaters in the United States on two nights, Jan. 16 and 18. The season 4 finale will play in about 350 cinemas and will contain 15 minutes of extra footage.
