'Sherlock' season 4 news: Victorian-themed special has same premiere date in US and UK for the first time

Sherlockians and Cumberbabies, rejoice! Benedict Cumberbatch is returning as Sherlock in just a little more than two months' time. And for the first time in the history of the BBC show, fans in the US and UK get to enjoy his return on the same date.

The newest "Sherlock" special, which has been teased in the past months will be titled "The Abominable Bride." It will air in the US and the UK on the first day of 2016. Yes, fans get a brand-new Cumberbatch as Sherlock episode on Jan. 1, 2016.

The date was surprisingly dropped in a new trailer posted on Masterpiece PBS' youTube page. Well, it is not exactly new — it is the exact same one posted a few weeks ago just ending with the title card and the air date. So there might not be an all-new trailer but the release date is definitely something fans can rejoice about. It had been, after all, almost two years since they have seen the Cumberbatch starrer.

Season four airing is, as expected, still undated. The upcoming season is yet about to start filming, with Steven Moffat admitting recently that scripting is yet to begin. But a full episode is almost as good as a new season, compared to no "Sherlock" at all. This comes as an especially nice treat, given the wait time between the last season and the special episode is shorter than the previous ones.

Entertainment Weekly posts the official description for the new special: "Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the acclaimed modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle's classic stories. But now our heroes find themselves in 1890s London. Beloved characters Mary Morstan (played by Amanda Abbington), Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) and Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) also turn up at 221b Baker Street."

Watch the Victorian-themed "Sherlock" special on New Year's Day 2016.
