'Sherlock' season 4 plot rumors, news: Series to take a break after fourth season?

(Facebook/ Sherlock.BBCW)"Sherlock" season 4 will premiere on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 2017.

"Sherlock" season 4 is officially premiering on New Year's Day, but fans are more concerned about the series' future seasons than anything else.

It has been a roller coaster ride lately when it comes to the future of BBC's "Sherlock." The popular detective series has gained a massive, loyal fan following and effectively shot its star, Benedict Cumberbatch, into international fame. But Cumberbatch previously hinted that season 4 may be the last for the series. Thankfully, co-creator Steven Moffat clarified things and said that nothing has been set in stone. He even pointed out that Cumberbatch is actually open to portraying the detective in future seasons. However, given their busy schedules, it remains to be seen if a fifth season is still possible.

And while season 4 may not be the end, Cumberbatch did say that there may be a need for a break in between the upcoming season and season 5.

"I think there will be a lull. I don't think it will be in a year and a half necessarily but we will wait and see and maybe it will be," Cumberbatch said in an interview. "First and foremost we have got a fourth series for people to watch and understand and when they watch it they might go 'Oh yeah, maybe there does need to be a break now' because of what happens in it."

A break is nothing new to "Sherlock" fans, though. The series has a streak of making fans wait a few years in between seasons, so maybe a break before the fifth season won't be so bad.

As for what the new season will bring to the table, it has been said that more of Sherlock's past will be revealed. Fans know that Sherlock's backstory has never been fully explained, so a look into his background will certainly be interesting.

"Sherlock" season 4 will air on Jan. 1, 2017.
