'Sherlock' season 4 spoilers, news: Mark Gatiss weighs in on final season rumor

(Facebook/Sherlock.BBCW)Will "Sherlock" season 4 be the last?

The upcoming fourth season of "Sherlock" has been surrounded by rumors claiming that the series may be ending. However, it seems that no one — including co-creator Mark Gatiss — has any idea of the show's future.

Gatiss, who also plays Sherlock's brother, Mycroft, spoke to TVLine about the new season, as well as possible future seasons. And while series star Benedict Cumberbatch has previously hinted that season 4 may be the last, Gatiss admits that everything is really up in the air at the moment.

"We honestly don't know," he said, adding that they are very proud of the upcoming fourth season and would still like to continue if the choice was up to them. However, he also admitted that there are always going to be hurdles to face.

"It's just genuinely difficult to schedule everyone's diaries. It was a nightmare to schedule this season... and that's not going to go away. I mean, the success of 'Doctor Strange' is not going to make Benedict short of work," he explained.

Gatiss also previewed what the forthcoming season will be like now that a new member has joined the team — baby Watson.

"It creates a different dynamic," he said. "Now I must stress, although we have a lot of fun with it, it doesn't mean that 'Sherlock' has become 'Two Men, a Woman and a Baby.' But we do have fun with it, because there's fun to be had."

It definitely seems like the fourth season is going to have a lot of comical moments and dialogue. However, that doesn't mean that the plot won't necessarily be lighter in general. In fact, it has been said that this will be the darkest season yet — even going so far as to compare it to hell, thanks to Toby Jones' villainous Culverton Smith.

"Sherlock" season 4 will debut on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, at 9/8c on PBS/Masterpiece.
