'Star Trek: Discovery' release date, cast news: Showrunners recruit main character from 'The Walking Dead'

(AMC)Sonequa Martin-Green (R) who plays Sasha Williams in "The Walking Dead" will join the cast of the upcoming CBS series "Star Trek: Discovery."

The creators of the upcoming "Star Trek: Discovery" TV series have reportedly recruited one of their main characters from another hit series, "The Walking Dead."

Entertainment Weekly reports that the showrunners have finally wrapped up their search and have chosen actress Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Sasha Williams in "The Walking Dead," to play a major role as "Star Trek: Discovery's" lieutenant commander.

Forbes commented that the recent casting might have just hinted the next major death in "The Walking Dead." However, according to CBS, Martin-Green will play as lieutenant commander – not as the show's captain – for "Star Trek: Discovery," so EW's report that Martin-Green will remain a series regular in the zombie apocalypse show is feasible.

Earlier this month, it has been reported that "Star Trek: Discovery's" cast will include Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp. Yeoh is going to play the Starship Shenzhou captain, Captain Georgiou; Jones is going to act as Lt. Saru; and Rapp will take the role of Lt. Stamets, the science officer boarding Starship Discovery.

According to the same EW report, back in August, when Bryan Fuller was still "Star Trek: Discovery's" showrunner, he told reporters: "'Star Trek' started with a wonderful expression of diversity in its cast ... we're continuing that tradition. We wanted to paint a picture of Starlet that's indicative of encountering people who are much more different than we are."

Martin-Green is going to be the first African-American woman to take the lead while Rapp's role is going to be the first openly gay character in the "Star Trek" franchise.

Fuller added: "We've seen six series from the captain's point of view. To see a character from a [new] perspective on the starship -- one who has different dynamic relationships with a captain, with subordinates, it gave us richer context."

Alongside Martin-Green, Yeoh, Jones, and Rapp, fans will also see Chris Obi, Shazad Latif and Mary Chieffo taking on Klingon roles.

"Star Trek: Discovery" will premiere sometime in May 2017 on CBS.
