'Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens' updates shed new light on Kylo Ren's lightsaber; other designs of other lightsabers

"Star Wars" fans have gushed about Kylo Ren's lightsaber ever since it was announced. Its design is unlike any other lightsaber already shown in the franchise. But the crossguard lightsaber is not the only "weird" lightsaber design to be featured in the "Star Wars" lore.
Den of Geek uncovered new lightsaber designs from the whole "Star Wars" epic soap opera. The crossguard lightsaber first appeared in the comic pages of "Star Wars: Republic #61" by Dark Horse Comics. It was colored blue and was yielded by Jedi Roblio Darte during the Clone Wars.
Apparently, a lightwhip saber was also previewed in the comic book pages. Dark Lady Lumiya carried such a weapon in Marvel's "Star Wars #95." Luke Skywalker himself battled against the Dark Lady while she was in use of a lightwhip. The lightwhip is an exotic weapon and was first wielded by the Sith Lady Githany.
A sabercane, on the other hand, was first carried in the animated series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars." It also appeared in Dark Horse's "Knights of the Old Republic #32." The sabercane functions in the same way as the classic lightsaber but is smartly concealed as a cane.
But probably the most popular lightsaber design as of late is still Kylo Ren's. What makes it so unique is not only its crossguard design but also the manner by which Kylo acquired it. Unlike any other Sith Lord and Jedi, Kylo Ren did not just "come" to his very own laser sword; he actually made it.
J.J. Abrams spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the controversial lightsaber. "The lightsaber is something that [Kylo Ren] built himself, and is as dangerous and as fierce and as ragged as the character," Abrams revealed.
Will the other lightsabers make their way into "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens"? Fans will have to find out when the movie premieres on Dec. 18.
