'Star Wars' movie news: Who is Rey's dad? Luke Skywalker is NOT Rey's father

As soon as Rey was introduced in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," moviegoers have begun to speculate on the character's origins. The force is strong within her and flashbacks from her childhood suggest that she was deliberately left in planet Jakku.

Some "Star Wars" fans speculated that she is the daughter of Luke Skywalker as soon as the lightsaber "called" to her. The lightsaber was first owned by Luke's father Anakin before it was passed on to him. The lightsaber was being kept by Maz Kanata when Rey first knew of it. The last scene of the movie shows Rey giving it to Luke who has exiled himself in a high place.

There are also other speculations surrounding her parentage, but her connection to Luke was the most popular one. However, this speculation has been debunked by director J.J. Abrams.

At the recently held Tribeca Film Festival, Entertainment Weekly reports that  Abrams was aksed by an audience regarding Rey's parents and he said, "Rey's parents are not in 'Episode VII.' So I can't possibly say in this moment who they are," adding, "But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too."

To put an end to the Luke theory, he continued, "So might as well toss out those guesses that Luke is Rey's Dad, right?"

Event host Chris Rock prodded him more on the massively successful film that picked up 30 years from its previous sequel. While some people didn't like how similar the story was to "Return of the Jedi," Abrams explained it was essential to borrow familiar beats for the movie to serve as a bridge from the previous story to the next installments.

The director also confessed that he got very emotional while filming the last scene, which involved actor Mark Hamill. He said during the shoot he realized that Hamill, who was wearing a jedi robe, was the same age actor Alec Guinness was when he played Obi-Wan Kenobi in "A New Hope."

Abrams has passed on the directing chair to Rian Johnson for "Star Wars VIII."
