'StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void' news: last game for the popular franchise

There is no doubt that StarCraft is one of the longest running videogame franchises in existence today. While the series has been a success and has amassed considerable following, it was recently confirmed that the upcoming "Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void" would be the franchise's final title, much to the disappointment of not only its fans but also the producers themselves.

"StarCraft," whose first installment was made available in 1998, is a "military science fiction real-time strategy" game published by Blizzard Entertainment. The franchise follows the struggle for dominance of three main species – the Terrans, the Zerg and the Protoss.

To date, there are six available "StarCraft" and "Starcraft 2" titles. Most versions of the main canon of "StarCraft" has been released to commercial and critical success across the globe. The reception to the game has been mostly positive, which is why it is very surprising that recently, Tim Morten, lead producer of the game, has confirmed that "Legacy of the Void" is the last "StarCraft" main canon game.

"It's the end of this story. Could there be arcs that involve [these characters] in the future? Anything's possible. But we didn't want to cop out with the 'to be continued' - this is a resolution to this story," shared Morten in an interview with Kotaku.

While the news is incredibly disappointing especially to followers of "StarCraft" who literally grew up with the game, Morton, on the same interview, also shed light on why "StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void" would be the perfect ending to the stellar series.

"This story is super epic. Obviously everyone's gonna say that about their game, but this one, this one's got some teeth in it and I think this is something people are gonna remember eight, 10, 20 years from now," Morton furthered.

No date has been announced as to when Legacy of the Void would be available. However the game has started beta testing last March 2015, so the release should come soon enough.
