'Suicide Squad 2' release date, news, updates: Will Smith on choosing David Ayer film; movie to focus on The Joker?

(Facebook / Suicide Squad)'Suicide Squad' star Will Smith recently talked about why he chose the film over 'Independence Day 2.'

Following the success of "Suicide Squad" in the big screens, the movie's stars are now starting to talk about their experiences with the franchise. In fact, just recently, Will Smith revealed why he chose the David Ayer film over "Independence Day 2."

Previously, Smith revealed that he had to choose between "Suicide Squad" and "Independence Day: Resurgence" but he chose the former. At the time of the revelation, the actor did not explain why he chose the superhero film.

In a recent interview at the Facebook Headquarters, Smith finally opened up. According to Entertainment Weekly, the actor said, "I had the two screenplays in front of me for the Independence Day 2 and for Suicide Squad. I had to choose between the two of those. ... I do want to aggressively go forward and do new things and create and hopefully be able to stumble upon a new heyday."

It may not have been an easy decision to make for the award-winning actor. "Independence Day" gave him a big break and turning down his role in the sequel might not have been a great experience. On the other hand, the success of "Suicide Squad" may be all he was looking for.

Meanwhile, rumors are hot on the alleged release of "Suicide Squad 2." Ever since the first film took on the big screens this year, fans have been requesting that a sequel be helmed. The film's success may also pave the way for a stand-alone movie for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.

It is also widely speculated that if Harley becomes the focus of "Suicide Squad 2," Jared Leto may return to reprise his iconic role as The Joker. Leto mentioned before the first film was released that there were supposedly enough scenes to create a solo Joker movie. However, when the film came out, Leto didn't even make a 15-minute appearance. His scenes were slashed and some were only featured in "Suicide Squad: Extended Cut."

Some are now hoping that the character may be given more screen time in the sequel. Ayer and Warner Bros. have yet to respond to the rumors.

"Suicide Squad 2" is rumored to arrive sometime 2018.
