'Super Mario Run' news, updates: New game on iOS breaks 'Pokémon GO' downloads record in first day

The new iOS game "Super Mario Run" broke records and surpassed "Pokémon GO" in terms of number of downloads in its first day of release.
According to a report from The Verge, analytics firm Apptopia revealed that "Super Mario Run" was downloaded 2.85 million times during its launch day. On the other hand, "Pokémon GO" was downloaded 900,000 times. However, there are also other factors to consider in making the comparison.
It can be recalled that "Pokémon GO's" launch was highly exclusive and limited to just three countries in its first day. It then started to roll out to other countries and regions in the following weeks. That explains why "Pokémon GO's" download stats jumped to 5.6 million in its third day of availability. On the other hand, "Super Mario Run" is already available in up to 150 countries since its first official release.
Barely a week since "Super Mario Run's" launch, "Pokémon GO" still holds the title of being the most downloaded game during the first-week availability.
On the other hand, just a few days after "Super Mario Run's" release, there have been mixed reactions already about the game that can inevitably affect its hits in the coming days and weeks.
On Dec. 19, Bloomberg reported that the shares of Nintendo Co. in Tokyo dropped by 4.4 percent following the game's release and associated the losses to the "tepid reviews" that the game is getting. As of writing, the game garnered 2.5 stars on App Store – something that is not necessarily helpful for a highly anticipated game's first days of release.
The same report quoted Ace Research Institute analyst Hideki Yasuda, saying: "Investor expectations were very strong. There are a lot of people writing on the App Store that Super Mario Run isn't very fun. Perhaps expectations were too high."
On the other hand, Variety reported that mobile app store optimization company Sensor Tower estimates the game has bagged "more than $5 million in revenue" during its first-day release.
"Super Mario Run," just like "Pokémon GO," is a free-to-download game. However, players will have to purchase the game's entire content for $9.99.
