'Supergirl' season 1 spoilers: pilot leaks six months early

One of the most buzzed about shows coming to the small screen is "Supergirl" and a full six months before the pilot is to be released, the entire 46-minute episode is leaked online. This comes weeks after the release of a 6-minute trailer that was generally well-received by the public (except for some comments about it being a bit too "Devil Wears Prada"). The "leaked" pilot seem to be free from any watermarks and some are speculating that the supposed leak is actually a marketing ploy by CBS to generate positive buzz.

This happened as well to shows like "Gotham" and "The Flash" last year. Also like "The Flash," the six-minute trailer for "Supergirl" almost gives away the entire pilot by spelling out everything to the viewing public. This seems to be a trend nowadays, to show viewers exactly what they will get, in order to hook them in.

What is surprising though, is that the even at 6 minutes, the trailer actually did not address a lot of the big reveals and twists and turns that the pilot contains. Here are some of the biggest spoilers from the leaked pilot episode of "Supergirl" courtesy of whatculture.com:

  • We find out that Kara Zor-El is sent from Krypton to Earth along with the baby Kal-El,  her cousin,  so that she can protect him when they arrive on Earth.  Kara is shown as older than Kal and she was sent out minutes after him,  but she is thrown off course.
  • Young Kara is trapped in The Phantom Zone, where Krypton sends its exiled prisoners.  She "sleeps"  for 24 years and in that time,  doesn't age since time doesn't pass in that place.  It is not shown how she escapes,  but when she does,  her ship brings along with it the inmates of the zone and they end up hiding across the Earth.
  • Superman makes an appearance in the pilot and is shown in shadows and in long shot.  He is already a grown man, into his powers,  when Kara arrives on Earth  and he delivers her to the Danvers,  a married scientist couple that is instrumental in helping him understand his powers.  Superman never meets Kara again.
  • James Olsen (known as Jimmy Olsen) is played by African American hunk,  Mehcad Brooks and although initially he seems so far from the Jimmy Olsen everyone has been used to seeing on movies, TV and comics,  his version of James Olsen is still true to the essence of the character.  James was sent to National City by his friend, Superman,  to keep an eye on Kara.
  • Kara fights her first villain from The Phantom Zone, Vartox, and although he may not be a very remarkable villain,  their fight scenes together are truly memorable.
  • It is revealed,  in a suprise twist,  that the mysterious General being mentioned all throughout the episode is actually Kara's aunt, her mother's twin,  who is very much alive and hell-bent on killing Kara in order to take over Earth.  It is further revealed that Kara's mother was instrumental in sending said aunt to The Phantom Zone when she tried to take over Krypton.
  • Finally,  the pilot just reinforces what the trailer hinted at:  Melissa Benoist was a brilliant casting choice to play Kara/Supergirl.  Although naysayers initially thought of her as too "plain"  and even "flat-chested" to ever do justice to the role,  Benoist has shown that she has what it takes to be the perfect embodiment of both Kara and Supergirl.   Fans will surely embrace Benoist, as they did her co-Glee alum, Grant Gustin,  who also encountered the same initial negative comments when he was cast as Barry/The Flash.

Can't wait to watch the pilot now? Reports say that leaked episode is still online and available for download (another clue that it was probably not a leak), so that is an option (although we do not condone piracy). Or, as other mere mortals would do, wait the requisite 6 months to watch the pilot when it premieres in 6 months.
