'The Big Bang Theory' season 9: Episode 1 left viewers feeling, 'What now?'

(CBS)

While "The Big Bang Theory" season nine is perhaps one of the most anticipated seasons of the CBS sitcom, it does not necessarily live up to the hype, at least for the first episode. If anything, viewers who have watched the pilot episode, was left with the dreaded, "What now?" feeling. At least that's how one review sees it.

Den of Geek's Caroline Preece reviewed episode one of "The Big Bang Theory" season nine, titled "Matrimonial Momentum." It was a long review that pointed the good and the bad, which eventually ended in saying that the episode left the viewers in a sour note, which is very uncharacteristic of sitcoms in general and "TBBT" particularly.

Fans anticipated a really exciting comeback for the CBS sitcom, especially as they were promised answers to some of their questions. Two of the most pressing are whether or not Leonard and Penny will indeed tie the knot, as well as what will happen to Sheldon and Amy's relationship. While the episode did answer those, with Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) getting married and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) eventually breaking up for good, it failed to do so with much satisfaction.

For one, Leonard and Penny continue to live in separate apartments, having hit a brick wall right after their wedding. The wedding was short and sweet — with the sweetest "Toy Story" wedding vows from Penny — but the night after wasn't. They dive into a discussion of the girl Leonard once kissed, whom everybody finds out works at the University with him. So they drive home and go their separate ways.

Sheldon, on the other hand, sulks and follows Amy around. While it seems on paper, in action, it just seems desperate and not like the Sheldon everybody has come and love at this point. He has grown a lot in the last eight seasons, emotionally opening up to Amy, and this season nine Sheldon seemed like a step back.

This only leaves fans going full circle from where their started: What now? Will Leonard and Penny work out their marriage or will they realize that they pushed through with it because of pressure? Will Sheldon retreat back to his girl-hating ways or will love eventually find its way back? Perhaps that's really what the show intended for episode one, to loop back to those questions so that everyone can unfold the answers slowly as season nine progresses.

It's worth noting, however, that Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) did provide the best comic reliefs in the whole episode.

Watch what else happens to the whole gang on "The Big Bang Theory" as new episodes air on CBS every Monday night.
