'The Blacklist' season 4 episode 9 spoilers: Is Red really Liz's father?

(Facebook/NBCBlacklist)Red will continue to lie to Liz in the upcoming episode of "The Blacklist."

Liz (Megan Boone) may never know the truth about her real father in the upcoming episode of "The Blacklist."

The NBC series is currently on hiatus and will be back in January. During the winter break, fans will have time to reflect if Red (James Spader) was indeed telling the truth about Liz's paternity during the last episode. While being tortured by Kirk (Ulrich Thomsen), he admitted that he was Liz's father. The manner by which Red revealed the "truth" makes viewers think he did not mean it though. Kirk was about to kill him and Red only said what the other man wanted to hear. Of course, Liz did not know what transpired and Red refused to tell her more about it.

Still, the possibility that Red may be Liz's dad is as strong as ever. The test conducted proved to Kirk that he was not related to her by blood. He knew Katarina (Lotte Verbeek) was having an affair with Red while they were married. He accused Red of stealing both his wife and daughter from him. When Kirk was ready to administer the last dose of poison on Red, the latter whispered something to him. At the end, Kirk left without killing him. Red told Liz and Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) that his nemesis was gone forever, but is he?

Aside from the continued mystery of Liz's paternity, the upcoming episodes will see the hunt for the mole within Red's team. As per the promo for the Jan. 5 episode, Red will discover that a dangerous terrorist has been getting help from someone in the FBI task force. There is a spy among Liz, Ressler, Samar (Mozhan Marnò) and Aram (Amir Arison). The last scene in the teaser where Harold (Henry Lennix) is telling the mole to decide on where his/her loyalty lies is a big clue. Although the suspect's back is to the camera, there is a headshot that teases the person's identity. The black hair and feminine shape appears to belong to Samar.

"The Blacklist" season 4 returns on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
