'The Last of Us 2' release date news and updates: Long wait ahead for 'Last of Us' fans; what direction will the sequel take?

The success of "The Last of Us" naturally led to players clamoring for a sequel. While it hasn't been confirmed, the odds are in favor of the gamers. The question now is when the game will arrive and what direction will it go.
PlayStation fans were hoping that the company's recent PlayStation Meeting would yield more concrete information about "The Last of Us 2." Unfortunately, Naughty Dog didn't have anything to share with fans during Sony's event.
Lack of confirmation aside, it's a given that "The Last of Us 2" will be gracing consoles sooner or later. Aside from the fact that something as good as this game deserves a sequel, voice actor Nolan North let slip that Naughty Dog is indeed working on it.
The little slip was also given credence by Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog's creative director, when he revealed that just before he and Bruce Straley were asked to work on "Uncharted 4," they "were brainstorming ideas for 'The Last Of Us 2' with new characters; ideas for 'TLOU 2' with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas."
Now that "Uncharted 4" is out, it's only natural for gamers to hope (or assume) that Druckmann and his team would commence work on "The Last of Us 2." But what can fans expect to see in the sequel?
Based on Druckmann's previous statements, fans have been theorizing on what story arcs are possible for Joel and Ellie if the game goes the fantasy route or the sci-fi one. Those who opted for the former have advanced theories that new characters might be introduced that would expand on the duo's journey. Meanwhile, those who think the game would be better served if t follows the scientific route posit that there might be a timeline jump and gamers would see a more advance civilization.
Unfortunately, fans have a long wait ahead of them before "The Last of Us 2" is ever released.
