'The Last of Us 2' release date news: sequel development to begin following DLC release for 'Uncharted 4'

(Naughty Dog)Naughty Dog will work on "The Last of Us 2" following the release of "Uncharted 4" DLC.

"The Last of Us," the survival-horror video game from Naughty Dog is finally getting its sequel. "The Last of Us 2" has been highly anticipated, despite having no previous announcements from the game developer. Thankfully, Naughty Dog has finally started talking about the upcoming sequel and its development.

According to Naughty Dog programmer and creative director Neil Druckmann, they had always intended to release "The Last of Us 2," but plans were delayed in order to make way for "Uncharted 4."

"Before my partner, Bruce [Straley] and I, my directing partner, came on to 'Uncharted 4' we were working on prototypes for different ideas within 'The Last of Us' universe. Without going into specific genres [there were] ideas outside the 'The Last of Us.' All those things were left on hold when we had to come onto 'Uncharted 4' to direct the project," Druckmann explained.

As such, development of "The Last of Us 2" is expected to begin following the release of the DLC for "Uncharted 4."

"Our next focus is the single player [Uncharted 4] DLC and then, once we have enough resources, resurrect all those prototypes; see where we're at, see where the teams at, what they're excited for and go from there," he added.

With development in the very early stages, it seems that "The Last of Us 2" won't be released anytime soon. However, loyal "The Last of Us" fans are at least comforted with the fact that the sequel has been officially confirmed by Naughty Dog.

According to reports, Naughty Dog may focus on releasing the DLC for "Uncharted 4" this year and may choose to introduce "The Last of Us 2" during the E3 next year.

More information will surely come to light in the coming months. Be sure to check back for all the latest on "The Last of Us 2."
