The doctors and nurses of "The Night Shift" are once again thrust into heart-wrenching and high stakes drama as Drew, TC, Scott, and the rest of the team try to save lives, both in Afghanistan and at home.

The second half of the popular medical drama's premiere episode will see Doctors TC Callahan (Eoin Macken), Scott Clemmens (Scott Wolf) and Paul Cummings (Robert Bailey, Jr.) working desperately to save a woman and her young son after they were involved in a car accident. As the boy hovers between life and death, the team notices something strange in the dynamics of his family. In Afghanistan, Drew Alister (Brendan Fehr) and Syd Jennings (Jennifer Beals) deal with the fallout from shots fired in the OR.

Fans will recall that the previous episode saw Drew and Syd attending to a 15-year-old pregnant patient who's deathly afraid of her husband. The premiere also saw TC and Jordan (Jill Flint) trying to find a way to continue working together in the night shift while dealing with their breakup.

A trailer for the upcoming episode, "The Thing with Feathers," hints at more problems for the night shift. The short clip starts with the hospital staff rushing to get a patient in, while people are seen protesting outside. Paul is shown looking out at the crowd from inside his vehicle, while fans get a quick glimpse of Syd holding a baby. TC's voice can be heard saying that they have all made mistakes and that he "doesn't care what you did back then, I just care what you do now."

"The Night Shift" might shift between two locations — Afghanistan and San Antonio Medical Center — but as the trailer attests, the problems remain the same. As Drew and Syd are seen in Afghanistan, Scott and Paul try to get their patient away from the crowd of protesters. Unfortunately, they're having difficulties as the rowdy crowd is preventing them from leaving. At one point, soldiers have their guns pointed at the protesters while Paul orders them to stand down.

Meanwhile, back in the hospital, Dr. Topher Zia (Ken Leung) advises another doctor that they are surgeons so he should "own it." An orderly appears to have snapped and is suddenly threatening everyone with a scalpel. Kenny (J.R. Lemon) tries to stop him, but he might have ended up being hurt in return.

While fans of "The Night Shift" are no doubt glad to see their favorite doctors back in action, there's a void where Dr. Krista Bell-Hart (Jeananne Goossen) and Michael Ragosa (Freddy Rodriguez) used to be.

NBC will air episode 2 of "The Night Shift" season 3 on June 8 at 10 p.m.
