'The Night Shift' season 3 spoilers: Scott and Paul caught in the middle of a violent protest in episode 4; Topher tries to maintain control of the ER

"The Night Shift" has had some pretty far-out storylines, but season 3 has so far been keeping it real, with storylines that hit close to home, and episode 4 is no exception.

It would seem that the show will finally shed light on the protests and violence that formed a big part of the season's official trailer. Episode 4 will see the doctors of "The Night Shift" at ground zero as the city erupts in violence over a jury verdict. Things become even more complicated when the suspect of racially motivated shooting that caused the unrest was brought to the ER for treatment, causing dissent even among close friends like Kenny (JR Lemon) and Paul (Robert Bailey Jr.). While Topher (Ken Leung) tries to keep the chaos in the ER at bay, TC's (Eoin Macken) choice on which of their two patients to bring in raises questions from Paul and Scott (Scott Wolf).

The network has released the trailer for the upcoming episode, "Three-Two-One," and intense is a mild way of describing it. The trailer starts with a shot of the protesters as they chant "no justice, no peace." Kenny is then shown talking to Jordan (Jill Flint) about the discrimination that he faces every day. As he recounts an experience, policemen are shown taking down protesters, while TC observes the chaos. The scene then shifts and shows Paul telling the protesters that he's "the doctor trying to save the kid who was shot." The kid is seen slumped against a wall. Scott and Paul try to get the victim to the ambulance, but it has been looted. They have no choice but to operate on the kid out in the open. It's a risky move, especially when a molotov cocktail is thrown at them.

While the trailer shows Scott and Paul doing their best to get to the young African-American man who was shot, a photo still shows that there's another victim — a white police officer. It's possible that TC might have prioritized treating the officer, causing tension between him, Scott, and Paul.

It promises to be another emotional hour for viewers of "The Night Shift." The past few episodes have seen the doctors really going through the ringer — Drew (Brendan Fehr) with his truncated tour of Afghanistan, Topher with his issues with his mother. The upcoming episode promises more of the same, as the show touches on the racial tension that still permeates the United States today.

"The Night Shift" season 3 episode 4 will air on June 22 at 10 p.m. on NBC.
