'The Night Shift' season 4 renewal, release date news: New season to return on NBC sometime in 2017

NBC's medical drama TV series, "The Night Shift," is confirmed to have been renewed for season 4. The show follows the tension-filled lives of doctors, nurses and the rest of the medical staff, some of them coming from military backgrounds, at San Antonio Memorial Hospital.

"Week after week 'The Night Shift' tells incredibly engaging and emotional stories that draw us into a unique world," explained Jennifer Salke, who is the current president of NBC Entertainment, in a Variety article. "We are delighted to renew the show for an exciting fourth season and look forward to continue working with such a great cast and executive producing team."

The hour-long TV series came out leading against three other big TV networks in the summer and averaged 6.8 million viewers during its Live 7 day rating according to Cinema Blend. It also held its ground on the number one slot in its Wednesday timeslot airing every 10 p.m. against its competing networks made up of ABC and CBS in the 18-49 demographics.

"The Night Shift" highlights the life of Dr. TC Callahan (Eoin Macken) who was formerly an Army medic. He joins San Antonio Memorial Hospital carrying signs of Post Traumatic Disorder after seeing his own brother die in the battlefield. Dr. Callahan is known for his stubborn nature and often finds himself disagreeing with hospital policies and protocols resulting to arguments with hospital administrators that include his former girlfriend Dr. Jordan Alexander (Jill Flint). Dr. Alexander just got promoted to chief of the team where Callahan is a part of.

Meanwhile, Callahan and Alexander are also joined by other doctors in the night shift that include Dr. Topher Zia (Ken Leung) who used to be an Army Ranger and decided to be a surgeon in the private sector. Anoethr doctor in the team is Dr. Drew Alister (Brenda Fehr), a gay medic in the Army. Dr. Alister kept his sexual orientation to himself for fear of being discriminated against.

Other regular members of the cast from season 3 are Robert Bailey Jr., JR Lemon, Tanaya Beatty, and Scott Wolf. Jeff Judah and Gabe Sachs are the show's writers and executive producers at the same time.

"The Night Shift" season 4 is expected to return sometime in 2017 on NBC.
