'The Vampire Diaries' season 7 episode 16 spoilers: Stefan moves on from Caroline with Valerie's help

(Facebook/thevampirediaries)Stefan and Valerie's relationship will be explained in the upcoming episode of "The Vampire Diaries."

Fans of the "Steroline" couple will be devastated to know that Stefan (Paul Wesley) has indeed moved on from Caroline (Candice King) in the latter half of season 7 of "The Vampire Diaries." In fact, he is set to be reunited with an old love, Valerie (Elizabeth Blackmore).

In her write up for Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Julie Plec revealed an interesting tidbit about Stefan and Valerie. According to her, the upcoming episode to air in April will see what took place during the three-year time jump. Last episode, Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) decision to desiccate and lock himself in his coffin shocked the fandom. Not only did he brush off Stefan's entreaties, but the Salvatore vampire also showed how Elena's (Nina Dobrev) absence had been killing him.

Stefan also had his share of painful goodbyes. When he saw how complete Caroline and Alaric's (Matthew Davis) family was in Dallas, he decided to leave and never come back. Stefan had Valerie with him as he ran away from Rayna (Leslie-Anne Huff). It appears that the amount of time they have spent together may have cemented their relationship. When the series returns after his hiatus, the pair will officially be a couple.

"You'll find there are certain mysteries left unexplored: how did Stefan and Valerie get together? ... Starting next episode, you'll get the answers in the form of what we're calling "Bridge Backs," a.k.a., a series of scenes that flash back to what happened over the three years that have passed since Damon went into the coffin. It's been a fun conceit for the season, and we hope you've enjoyed it," Plec said.

Meanwhile, the promo for "Days of Future Past" is enough to suggest that the Salvatore brothers are not in good terms after the time jump. In the clip, Rayna has finally caught up with Stefan and is urging him to ditch Damon. As he kneels waiting for the axe to fall, Stefan is shown uttering his brother's sentence. He has given up and is willing to sacrifice Damon for his life.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will return on Friday, April 1, at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
