"The Vampire Diaries" is taking a break and will return on April 1, but somehow, fans are wondering if Damon Salvatore's Ian Somerhalder will be the next to leave the series.

There were rumors that Somerhalder's character will die after Stefan (Paul Wesley) will transfer the mark on Damon. Previously, Stefan finally figured out how to kill Rayna (Leslie-Anne Huff) but he didn't pursue his plan after Bonnie (Kat Graham) revealed to him that Rayna is living her last life. Once she dies, everyone who bears the mark will die as well.

Based on the promo trailer for the upcoming episode, "Days of Future Past," Rayna was telling Stefan that it's time for him to let go of Damon. In another scene, she was seen asking Stefan if he's ready to free himself from Damon and he answered "yes."

It remains to be seen what will happen to the Salvatore brothers when the show returns from its hiatus but speculations are rife that Damon will be the one to bid adieu.

Will Somerhalder leave the show now that it has been confirmed for another season?

According to Zap2It, it's unlikely that the 37-year-old hunk will be the one to die in season 7. For one, the show has started to shift to the main focus of the storyline - the Salvatore brothers' bond - and it wouldn't make sense to kill one of them.

Another reason is that the show has been renewed recently, and a new season won't likely start well without the main characters.

There is, however, going to be a tragic ending to season 7 because Somerhalder himself teased that a big car explosion will happen, suggesting that someone could get injured – or even die.

Stefan and Damon are marked as safe from death and so are Caroline (Candice King) and Bonnie. But who's not on the safe list? - The well-loved characters Matt (Zach Roerig), Tyler (Michael Trevino) and Enzo (Michael Malarkey).

Fans will just have to tune in on Friday, 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
