As the cast and crew of "The Vampire Diaries" preps up for the show's eighth and final season, it seems that an Elena comeback is really happening, no matter what haters say.

For the past months, most fans have been wondering when Elena (Nina Dobrev) will appear. And when the last episode of the seventh season brought the character back to life through an audio appearance, a number of viewers went ballistic, assuming that she will be back for the eighth season.

Recent reports suggest that bringing Elena back will be difficult for production since Dobrev has a pretty busy year. Aside from the movie "XXX: The Return of Xander Cage," Dobrev has other projects this year including: "Arrivals" and "Crash Pad." She is also expected to star in the 2017 movie "Flatliners."

However, showrunner Julie Plec's recent remarks may hint that Dobrev will return to the series that gave her a chance to make it big. Speaking with TV Line during the San Diego Comic-Con last month, Plec called Dobrev out, reminding her of the promise she made regarding a comeback for the entire franchise's final episode.

Plec said, "Not to put too much pressure on anything, Nina Dobrev, but a promise was made. An emotional promise that I'd like to see come to life. There's been friendship promises made, and now we'll see if we can deliver on them."

"Delena" fans have long been requesting to see Elena and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) reunite but it seemed impossible over the past months. This time, "Delena" dreams may finally come true as "The Vampire Diaries" season eight prepares for its final blood-letting.

Since Plec has revealed that the upcoming installment will be focusing on the franchise's being and what it felt like to come this far, it is only reasonable that the writers will helm a storyline that will bring back other major characters who departed earlier.

Is Elena returning in her physical form this time? Will she finally reunite with Damon, or will someone come in between the couple?

"The Vampire Diaries" season eight is scheduled to premiere on October 21 on The CW.
