Although the initial promo teaser for the upcoming series finale of "The Vampire Diaries" hints that Nina Dobrev will be back as her Elena Gilbert character, the latest reports claim that the actress is actually returning as Elena's doppelganger, Katherine Pierce, who will spoil Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline's (Candice Accola King) wedding in the second to the last episode of the series.

There is no denying that one of the most-anticipated events in the final season of "The Vampire Diaries" is the return of Dobrev's Elena character. While the previous episodes hinted that she will, indeed, reprise her fan-favorite character, the latest reports claim that the actress will be reprising her Katherine role instead.

According to sources, Katherine will return to the series to attend Stefan and Caroline's wedding. While it remains unknown what trouble she will bring to the wedding of the man of her life, Stefan, some can't help but opine that Katherine's return will be even more exciting than the wedding itself.

Siver Time suspects that since Dobrev is only contracted for a single episode of "The Vampire Diaries" series final season, she may no longer reprise her role as Elena, and her presence as Katherine in this Friday's second to the last episode is the best the fans can expect.

Based on the promo for this Friday's episode, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) suggests that Stefan and Caroline's wedding will be the perfect bait to lure Katherine. To recall, last week's episode featured Kai (Chris Wood) revealing to Bonnie (Kat Graham) that the death of Cade only makes hell a better place as the long-thought ruler of Hell is not him but a person who is worse than him, knows all the weaknesses of the Mystic Falls supernatural beings, and has all the intentions to revenge on them: Katherine.

As the teaser for the series finale episode has Damon saying that Katherine has been inhabiting Elena's body all along, does it really mean that the Elena that Damon loves is not really coming back?
