After the surprise success of Naughty Dog's "The Last of Us," it only made sense that a movie based on the award-winning video game is next on the agenda.

The action-adventure survival horror game revolves around Joel, a survivor in a post-apocalyptic America who has to escort a young woman, Ellie, to another group of survivors. The game focuses on the relationship between the protagonists—the single father who lost his daughter during the outbreak of a mutated disease and Ellie, the infected girl who might be holding the cure.

The game has been widely praised for its plot, characters and game play. It has sold more than 8 million units in its first year and is considered one of the greatest video games of all time. 

Casting is still ongoing for the movie but "Games of Thrones'" Maisie Williams is considered a shoo-in for the role of Ellie.

Williams, who plays Arya, one of the few remaining Starks on Westeros, admits that she was told that the producers would love for her to play the doomed Ellie but since the film is not happening yet, "I cannot play Ellie right at this very minute."

"But when that comes around – if and when that comes around – I'll be here," she said.

Fans of the video game would be gratified to know that screenwriter Neil Druckmann is doing his best to stay true to game. However, he admits that "there's some big changes, but the tone and what the story's trying to say is pretty faithful to the game."

The script for the movie is already on its second draft so it seems that this project is moving along quite smoothly. Now all fans have to do is wait for the movie and the game's sequel to come out.

According to actor Nolan North, who lent his voice and likeness to the character, David, the sequel to "The Last of Us" is already in the pipeline but will only start production after the movie is released. He also hinted that the next game would be a completely different story that would not include Joel and Ellie anymore.
