'Thor: Ragnarok' news, release date: Marvel unveils first look photo, official synopsis

(Facebook/Thor)Marvel has released the official synopsis, along with a first look photo of "Thor: Ragnarok."

It's been a long time coming, but Marvel has finally released the official synopsis of the third "Thor" film in the trilogy "Thor: Ragnarok." But the studio did not settle for that — Marvel accompanied the release with a first look photo from behind the scenes.

The photo, which was published on Marvel's website, sees director Taika Waititi looking up with one hand in the air as he presumably gives Chris Hemsworth — who is standing next to him in full Thor costume — some directorial points for the scene they're shooting.

But what's even more interesting is the synopsis that Marvel unveiled in the same post. The plot of the forthcoming "Thor: Ragnarok" has been shrouded in mystery — apart from a few confirmations — but this synopsis brings new light to the story.

"Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok — the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization — at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela," the synopsis read. "But first he must survive a deadly gladatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger — the Incredible Hulk!"

The very idea of Thor and the Hulk bashing each other in the head is naturally thrilling, especially given their respective strengths. It will be even more exciting to witness on the silver screen, but fans will have to wait a while before "Thor: Ragnarok" is released. Thankfully, they will have two other Marvel superhero films to tide them over — with "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" dropping in April and "Spider-Man: Homecoming" premiering in July.

Another character fans are looking forward to seeing in "Thor: Ragnarok" is Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange, who made his Marvel cinematic debut in the eponymous film of 2016.

"Thor: Ragnarok" is scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 3.
