Jason Bourne movie news: Tommy Lee Jones joins the cast

The return of Jason Bourne promises to be even more exciting with the inclusion of Oscar-winning actor, Tommy Lee Jones. The veteran actor is said to be playing a "superior officer at the CIA."

There has been a lot of activity on the Bourne front, with casting news about the fifth installation of the series coming every couple of days. News of Jones being on board follows on the heels of recent casting news about "Ex Machina's" Alicia Vikander joining the franchise and Julia Stiles agreeing to reprise her role as Nicky Parsons.

Paul Greengrass, who did a remarkable job directing both "The Bourne Supremacy" and "The Bourne Ultimatum," is back in the director's chair.

There is scant information about the fifth Bourne movie, although it is a given that erstwhile CIA super assassin, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), will, at some point in the movie, be extricating himself from tough situations using whatever resources are available to him, be it a magazine or a small letter opener.

As a high-ranking CIA official, it would appear that Jones will be taking over the role that actors, Brian Cox, Chris Cooper, David Strathairn and Edward Norton previously brought to life.

It has been eight years since fans last saw Damon as Jason Bourne. No one really thought that another Bourne movie with Damon would happen, especially since Greengrass previously said that with Bourne regaining his memories, there was not any creative avenue left for the character and the series. So it is particularly intriguing where Greengrass and writer, Christopher Rouse would take the story.

The director is also the reason why Damon agreed to reprise the role of the memory-impaired super spy. The actor revealed in an interview that he would only consider going back to the series if Greengrass is involved.

Production for the next Bourne offering will reportedly last until the end of summer and is expected to hit theaters by July 16, 2016.
