The 30-year long wait is finally over for "Top Gun" fans. A new installment of the 1986 movie about elite pilots will again be soaring its way to the big screens very soon.

"Top Gun," which premiered almost thirty years ago in 1986, is an American blockbuster film directed by Tony Scott and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson. It is arguably the movie that has cemented Tom Cruise's action star status in Hollywood. The film mainly follows the adventures of Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, played by Cruise, as he trains to become a navy fighter pilot.

In 2012, Scott, has tragically taken his own life before his plans for a sequel were actualized. With the director gone, for awhile it seemed like "Top Gun 2" would never see the light of day. Thankfully, Paramount and Skydance have recently announced that the movie has been greenlighted.

Excitement is an understated way to say how fans of the movie have reacted upon the announcement of the sequel. However, there is really only one question that has plagued their minds: Is Cruise reprising his iconic role as Maverick?

There were speculations that a new actor will be chosen to take the place of Cruise. However, Bruckheimer quickly dispelled the rumors in an interview with Variety saying,

"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no 'Top Gun' without Maverick and it's going to be Maverick playing Maverick."

Aside from Cruise coming back to reprise his role, the production of the upcoming film has also signed on writer Justine Marks to pen the screenplay for "Top Gun 2." During one of the press junkets of "Terminator Genysis," Skydance CEO David Ellison, revealed a little snippet on why Marks was chosen as the movie's screenwriter.

"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy have turned into today," claimed Ellison.

No set date has been released for "Top Gun 2."
