After the departure of stars Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf, 'Transformers: Age of Extinction,' the fourth movie in the franchise, was the beginning of a new trilogy. The 2014 'Transformers' reboot featured stars, Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor, while director Michael Bay, continues to be at the helm of the movie franchise.

Aside from being critically panned, the movie was the highest-grossing film of 2014, with box office earnings reaching $1.104 billion. Naturally, with that kind of success, Paramount Pictures would be remiss if they didn't green light the movie's sequel. While details about the upcoming sequel are scarce, the temporarily titled 'Transformers 5' is expected to be released in 2017.

Last month, Deadline reported that the 'Transformers' writing team, led by Akiva Goldsman, had completed the blueprint for the upcoming sequel and that Michael Bay would be back in the director's chair. Unfortunately, Michael Bay quickly responded via his Twitter that he has yet to sign on as director. "I have not committed to any idea as of yet. Just met with Steven [Spielberg] and we are discussing," he tweeted.

At this point, 'Transformers 5' has yet to officially appoint a director.

While much of the pre-production for 'Transformers 5' is being tightly kept under wraps, it is being speculated that the movie will feature multiple storylines.

According to the Christian Post, the first storyline will follow Cade Yeager (Wahlberg) as he teams up with the Autobots and Dinobots to save to Earth from a looming threat. The second storyline shift its focus to Optimus Prime as he searches for his ancestors, the Quintessons, in space. Optimus Prime may also have to face off with Unicron, who is said to be the main villain of the upcoming movie.

Unfortunately, none of the cast or crew of 'Transformers 5' have released official statements about the upcoming movie. Thus, it should be noted that details might still be subjected to change. More details are expected once filming for the movie commences.

'Transformer 5' is slated to premiere in 2017.
