'True Detective' season 3 renewal possible as Matthew McConaughey to return as Rust Cohle?

There is renewed hope for a third season of "True Detective" after all. Following reports that the HBO show has been canceled, fans are clinging to the possibility of a season 3 after Matthew McConaughey expressed his desire to return.

According to Vanity Fair, McConaughey voiced out his openness to bring the character back to life should he be given a chance. While speaking to DirecTV's "Rich Eisen Show," the Academy Award winner said, "I miss Rust Cohle, man."

"I miss watching him on Sunday nights," he continued. McConaughey played Rustin Cohle in the first season of "True Detective," which received immense critical acclaim and a wealth of good feedback from a huge fan base.

Season 2 became a disappointment after the first season had set the bar quite high. And even though the second season boasted famous names like Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, and Rachel McAdams, the story did not live up to expectations.

As previously reported, Michael Lombardo resigned from his position as the head of HBO programming and was replaced with Casey Bloys. The move sparked speculations that "True Detective" season 3 may not see the light of day due to its substandard second season, with some believing that Bloys may opt to reassign creator Nic Pizzolatto to a different project.

However, in light of McConaughey's willingness to reprise his role as Rust, there is hope yet. The 46-year-old actor revealed that he had a good time while he was playing the character, so it would make sense for him to want to come back.

"That thing — when I read [the original script] I knew in 20 minutes if I can play this guy, Rustin Cohle, I'm in," he said. "I was a happy man when I made that for six months, because I was on my own island."

Right now, everything is still in the rumor mill, so fans should take this news with a grain of salt.
