'Wayward Pines' season 3 air date, plot spoilers: Many characters to die at the hands of Abbies

(Facebook/WaywardPines)"Wayward Pines" has not yet been renewed for a third season.

"Wayward Pines" has yet to be given the official green light for a third season. However, if the series does get renewed, the residents of the town may find themselves in a savage environment.

It has been said that the third season will likely focus on the Abbies taking over. The previous season's finale saw everyone being put to sleep in hopes of survival, but it doesn't seem like the plan will work at all. Reports say that the upcoming season will see the Abbies on a murder spree across town.

Star Jason Patric has even apparently said that fans should not get too emotionally fond of the characters because everyone is dispensable, especially with the brutality that will inevitably occur. Main and recurring characters — no one is completely safe.

Season 2 saw the introduction of a baby Abbie, which could mean that the creatures are reproducing. This is certainly bad news for everyone since this will only likely increase their chances of being wiped out. Plus, fans witnessed the Abbies becoming more intelligent, which means humans may not even stand a chance.

However, before fans can even begin to daydream about how the story will go in the third season, Fox has to renew the series first. It is widely known that the first season was met with critical acclaim as well as high viewership. However, the second season did not do as well, with critics giving it mixed reviews and audience numbers dropping. Despite this, Fox Television Group CEO Dana Walden remains positive.

While speaking with TVLine in early August, Walden gave her two cents on the matter. "I definitely think there could be a Season 3," she opined. She also added that while the second season did not match the ratings of the first, "it's still the No. 1 scripted show of the summer."

Moreover, Walden said that the minds behind the show "have a really compelling for Season 3 that I liked very much. We're definitely talking about the show right now."
