'Wayward Pines' season 3 renewed or cancelled? Writer Blake Crouch explains season 2 finale; should series be renewed for a third season?

(Facebook/Wayward Pines)Blake Crouch says the series has always been about evolution.

"Wayward Pines" season 2 ended on a bleak and, strangely enough, a hopeful note that also allowed a little wiggle room for a third season. But is a season 3 still possible or is this the end of the series?

The final episode of "Wayward Pines" saw Jason (Tom Stevens) dying on the operation table from a bullet wound that Kerry (Kacey Rohl) inflicted. With the death of the town's leader, Theo (Jason Patric) became its de facto head and proceeded with the initial plan of saving as much of the residents as possible.

Of course, some of the residents would inevitably be sacrificed and Theo decided to be among those who would be left behind. The doctor also planned to shoot himself with vaious viruses left behind by Pilcher in the hopes that it will infect the remaining populace and the Abbies as well. But Kerry beat him to it, injecting herself so that Theo can have a cryopod and start anew in the future. The show's final scene showed that the world was still populated by Abbies. However, these beings were human-like and one newborn not only looked human, he or she also sounded like a normal baby.

The episode raised a lot of questions among fans, especially with regard to the very human-looking Abbie. Blake Crouch, "Wayward Pines" author and the series showrunner, told EW that the show has always been focused on the idea of evolution.

"Evolution has always pushed forward, and [the scene] suggests that the Abbies are changing also," explained Crouch. "The Abbies will evolve into something else."

Much like the series' first season, the last episode of season 2 could be the series finale and it would leave a lot of fans satisfied. However, there are also those who think the episode felt more like a bridge between this season and a third one.

Executive producer M. Night Shyamalan had previously told during the Wondercon roundtable that "Wayward Pines" is "a three-season story" and hoped that they will be given the chance to finish the story. It's a sentiment that Crouch also shares.

The question now is whether Fox will be picking up another season of the show. After all, season 2's numbers weren't as spectacular as those in the first season. But a third season might push the show back to its glory days as Crouch and Shyamalan try to answer some of the existential questions that season 2 raised.
