'Wayward Pines' season 3 updates: Viewers might see familiar faces returning; no word yet on show's renewal

The fate of "Wayward Pines" season 3 is still up in the air. But if Fox does decide to pick up the series for another season, fans can expect to see the continued evolution of humankind.

As opposed to the show's premiere season, viewers got to know more about the mysterious Aberrations, or Abbies, in season 2. As it turns out, these mutated humans were also highly intelligent, capable of organizing into groups, and communicating. The final scene of season 2, that of a female Abby cradling a human-looking baby, certainly raised a lot of questions.

Fans have come up with numerous theories on what that baby meant, with some speculating that the Abbies are going to look more human, while others are saying that it's a new breed of Abbies.

According to Crouch, writer of the "Wayward Pines" novels and the show's co-producer, the show is focused on human evolution, which is constantly pushing forward. The writer pointed out to EW that as humans have evolved, so will the Abbies. Perhaps, the baby is "a stop even beyond the Abbies."

While Crouch didn't share what he and fellow producer M. Night Shyamalan plan for the show in the event it gets another season, he did say that there's a possibility that some of season 2's characters will return. After all, some of the more notable citizens of "Wayward Pines" were once again placed in cryopods. That means there's a very good chance that viewers will once again see Theo (Jason Patric), CJ (Djimon Hounsou), and Xander (Josh Helman). But how long they will survive once they've been awakened remains a mystery for now.

There's no concrete news yet on whether or not "Wayward Pines" will be picked up for a third season. However, Fox CEO Dana Walden had previously said that the odds are good the show will be renewed. If that happens, fans can expect to see the series return in the summer of 2017.
