'Wet Hot American Summer' is back with Netflix's 'Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp'

"Wet Hot American Summer" may have been a commercial and critical flop when it was initially released in 2001 but it did not stop it from having such a cult following. Now, Netflix is hoping to tap into that through its new miniseries "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp" launching on the end of July.

"Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp" serves as a prequel the 2001 movie "Wet Hot American Summer" and will see the return of most of its original star-studded cast. The prequel, much like the movie it is based on, is a satire romantic comedy set in the 1980s about raunchy teen flicks.

The movie followed the last day of the characters in a fictional Jewish summer camp, while the Netflix series—as the title suggests—will trace everything back to its beginning.

The original film only earned $300,000 when it was released but as The Guardian reports, it has slowly gained a following in recent years and has become the very definition of a "sleeper hit."

The movie starred some of the best actors and comedians of this generation, who will mostly come back for the Netflix original series. These include Elizabeth Banks as bikini-loving Lindsay, Bradley Cooper as the clean-cut camp counsellor Ben, Janeane Garofalo as camp director Beth, Amy Poehler as fun but organized Susie, Paul Rudd as heartless womanizer Andy, and David Hyde Pierce as the awkward Professor Henry Newman.

The Netflix series is also throwing in new blood and will feature Michael Cera, Jon Hamm, Jason Schwartzmann, Kristen Wiig, and "Weird Al" Yankovic. Viewers looking at checking out what to expect can view the (very) not-so-safe initial trailer below. A poster has also been released which showcases the series' all-star cast.
