Tesla Autopilot features to be restricted in latest update to prevent irresponsible driving

Last October, Tesla finally released its much-awaited Autopilot feature via the Tesla Version 7.0 software update. Tesla vehicles have been equipped with the Autopilot system including a forward radar, a forward-looking camera, 12-range ultrasonic sensors and a digitally controlled braking system. These features allow Tesla vehicles to run semi-autonomously.

Unfortunately, the release of the Tesla Autopilot has not been smooth-sailing. Instead, the ground-breaking feature has been criticized due to some Tesla owners uploading videos on YouTube and showing that they were using the feature irresponsibly by removing their hand from the wheel. In one video, the driver is seen sitting on the backseat while having the Autopilot feature activated. The Autopilot feature also allows the Tesla vehicles to run very quickly which increases chances for autonomible accidents.

As a result, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that it will be adding constraints to the Autopilot feature to prevent further shenanigans.

Tesla is reportedly planning to limit the Autopilot features in its upcoming Tesla 7.1 firmware update. In the upcoming update, drivers can only access Autopilot and Autosteer if they are driving below the posted speed limit. This restriction will be activated only during highway driving. Tesla's active cruise control feature doesn't not seem to be affected by the constraints placed by the latest software update. According to Teslarati, the update has already been released to select beta testers.

Jaguar engineer and XF project manager Stephen Boutler has also recently criticized Tesla's Autopilot feature. According to Boutler, Jaguar also has the technology for semi-autonomous driving but has not released it because it is dangerous. It also gives a "false sense of security," Boutler told Mashable.

"If something happens [with Autopilot], it could set the technology back a decade," Boutler added. It seems that the negative press and effects of the Tesla Autopilot could hamper Jaguar's own development of autonomous technology. Boutler revealed that Jaguar will be testing self-driving cars in England soon.
