As fans patiently wait for George R.R. Martin to finally release the sixth book in his "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, the aged author dropped something more interesting than "The Winds of Winter" just after the Emmys.

"Game of Thrones," the series based on Martin's novels, has just claimed victory for the second consecutive time in the Outstanding Drama Series category. Backstage at the Emmy Awards night, Martin spoke about what the future has for the hit franchise.

Speaking with Deadline, Martin revealed: "I do have thousands of pages of fake history of everything that led up to Game of Thrones, so there's a lot of material there and I'm writing more." While this is definitely exciting news since he was obviously hinting of a potential prequel, Martin immediately clarified, "At the moment we still have this show to finish and I have two books to finish so that's all speculation."

The possibility of having a prequel is actually very great news for fans who don't want to see the end of "Game of Thrones" when the television series' eighth season wraps up. On the other hand, some are still focused on "The Winds of Winter" and are not at all interested in a prequel for "GoT" and "ASOIF" until Martin delivers the highly anticipated novel.

Unfortunately, there's still no news about the exact release date of "TWOW," but in a recent post on his blog, Martin said he is back home after the Emmys and "there's more work to do."

Martin has previously been slammed by fans after he was accused of focusing on attending events instead of putting time into his writing so he can finally unleash "The Winds of Winter." The prominent writer doesn't seem bothered by the criticism and is taking his time to complete the book.

For now, fans can continue hoping that the highly anticipated installment will finally hit bookshelves sometime early 2017.
