'Alien: Covenant' release date, news: Fox moves premiere to May 19; new poster released
Fox recently made numerous changes to its film release schedule, which includes "Alien: Covenant," the sequel to the "Alien" prequel, "Prometheus." The film is now slated to premiere in theaters on May 19, 2017.
"Alien: Covenant" was originally going to be released on Aug. 4, 2017, but Fox bumped up the film three months as part of its schedule change. The film is the second installment in the "Alien" prequel trilogy and will see the return of Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace), who survived the events of the first film.
A poster for the sequel has been released and teases the alien creature that will terrorize the crew of Covenant, a colony ship tasked with seeking a new planet to live in. The image shows an alien reminiscent of the one seen in the original "Alien" films. It's apparent that the creature is dangerous and the poster warns everyone what to do: "Run." It is accompanied by its release date.
Many fans were disappointed when word started spreading that the alien that will be featured in "Alien: Covenant" would be significantly different in terms of design. However, given the revelation of the creature via the poster, it looks like fans' qualms will be put to rest.
The upcoming film will also see the return of Michael Fassbender — playing two synthetic androids this time around. The first android is David, the same one the audience saw in "Prometheus." The second android is Walter, an upgraded version of David who accompanies the crew of Covenant.
David was last seen with Dr. Elizabeth Shaw at the end of the first film. The Covenant crew members will stumble upon David, who is now the only inhabitant of a seemingly idyllic planet. However, they soon learn that the planet is not at all what it seems.
"Alien: Covenant" will open in theaters simultaneously with the "Baywatch" reboot and "Annabelle 2."
