'Super Mario Run' release date, news: Trailing Nintendo game launches pre-registration on Android
After the widely mixed reactions that the "Super Mario Run" game got since its iOS debut last Dec. 15, Nintendo is taking another leap of faith with the game and launched the pre-registration for Android users.
The placeholder page that Nintendo opened this week means two things. One, "Super Mario Run" is indeed coming to Android. Two, it is arriving anytime soon. Interested Android players can now pre-register and get the latest updates and be notified once the game is available for download.
Nintendo made headlines back in September as it finally announced that they were venturing to the mobile gaming world with one of its most famed and classic franchises "Super Mario." The game was announced alongside the launch of the iPhone 7 and 7S last Sept. 7.
The game that started out as an exclusive for iOS mobile devices broke records and was downloaded more than 2.85 million times within its first 24-hours release compared to "Pokémon GO's" 900,000 download hits, as per Apptopia's report (via The Verge).
"Super Mario Run" and "Pokémon GO" have been repeatedly compared probably because they both come from equally famous and classic franchises from Nintendo. Although the latter is also trademarked and owned by Nintendo, its augmented reality mobile game was developed by the video game company, Niantic Labs.
On the other hand, another report from analyst firm App Annie (via Polygon) claims that "Super Mario Run" actually had up to 10 million downloads upon release last Dec. 15. However, the firm estimates that the app only brought in $4 million revenue for the giant Japanese video gaming company.
Despite breaking records worldwide, "Super Mario Run" received lukewarm reviews from iOS users. According to Variety, the game garnered 2.5 stars out of 5 from around 72,000 reviews on Apple App Store.
Aside from the lower-than-expected rating, another determining factor of a not-so-good start for the app is the dropping shares of the company in the Tokyo stock exchange since the game's release.
There are several factors eyed that have contributed to the tepid response to the game. For one, the set price of $9.99 is being criticized as relatively higher than what players would typically be willing to pay for. Added to this, players and critics are not very fond of the "no offline mode" feature of the game.
Nintendo has yet to reveal the game's release date on Android.
