'19 Kids And Counting': Petitions urge TLC to cancel show amid Josh Duggar child scandal; Duggar family fate hangs in balance

TLC has announced that it is pulling repeats of the hit show "19 Kids And Counting" after claims that Josh Duggar molested girls as a teenager. But even as support is beginning to grow for the Duggar family, including from former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a movement has kicked off to persuade TLC to cancel the show.

"19 Kids And Counting" is making headlines, but this time it isn't because of a pregnancy or marriage in the Duggar household. Josh Duggar, son of Jim Bob and Michelle had allegedly molested five minor girls, some even his sisters, reports InTouch Weekly.

What's more, his parents knew about these alleged acts and did not report him to the police more than a year after the then 14-year-old Josh had confessed to them. InTouch Weekly first broke the news on Thursday after obtaining the official police report by using the Freedom of Information Act.

The events started back in March 2002, when Josh admitted to his parents that he had reportedly touched a girl inappropriately. Josh allegedly touched the girl's breasts and genitals while she was sleeping. Instead of contacting the authorities, Jim Bob and Michelle met the elders of the church and told them about the incidents, which had increased in number by then. But none of the churchgoers informed the authorities and Josh was sent for a program consisting of physical work and counseling.

However, Michelle Duggar admitted to the police in 2006, when the felony investigation opened up, that Josh had not received any counseling and was only sent away to live with a family in the home remodeling business. In 2006, when the incident was first reported formally, Jim Bob reportedly hired a lawyer and refused to let the police interview Josh.

In fact, in 2003, according to the 2006 police report, Jim Bob and the church elders took his son to an Arkansas State Trooper named Jim Hutchens, who only gave Josh a stern talk. The same officer is now in prison and serving 56 years for child pornography.

Speaking exclusively to People, Josh released a statement saying, "I hurt others, including my family and close friends. I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation. We spoke with the authorities where I confessed my wrongdoing, and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling. I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life."

Josh Duggar has since resigned as a lobbyist from Family Research Council and cancelled his appearance at a Christian home schooling convention, reports ET Online.

TLC has removed "19 Kids And Counting" from its schedule, but hasn't cancelled the show. But even amidst increasing support for the Duggar family, including from former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a number of petitions on Change.org are now calling for the cancellation of the TV series. TLC is yet to respond to the petitions and until then, the fate of the Duggar clan continues to hang in balance.
