'Avatar 2' release date: Jake Sully to be chieftain of Omaticaya when film drops

(Facebook/Avatar)"Avatar 2" is scheduled for a Christmas 2018 release.

"Avatar 2" has been plagued by plot rumors as of late. The latest one has to do with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) becoming the chieftain of the Omaticaya, the Na'vi clan, when the movie releases in 2018.

It can be recalled that the first film saw Jake being the main protector of the Na'vi of Pandora. He served as the connection between humans and the Na'vi. Ultimately, the humans had ill intentions against the Na'vi, which led Jake to switch sides. In the end, the Na'vi won the battle against the humans.

The sequel is also expected to portray the relationship between Jake and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). The previous film saw them get together and they are expected to tie the knot in "Avatar 2."

Apart from that, it was previously reported that the upcoming film will also see the return of Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) and Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang). The two characters met their end in the first film, so it is unknown how they will be revived in the sequel. However, there has been the growing assumption that Grace may come back in Na'vi form.

The upcoming film is only the start of a sequence of "Avatar" films. The franchise already has four sequels lined up for the coming years, starting with "Avatar 2." The targeted date of release for the film is Christmas 2018, while the rest of the sequels are also set to premiere during the holiday season of the year selected. Director James Cameron has stated that he doesn't want to keep fans waiting in between movies, so the goal is to release each one within reasonable gaps.

"The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern. I want them to be released as close together as possible. If it's an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we're able to fulfill on that promise," explained Cameron.
