'Clash of Clans' September 2016 update: free gems, new mode among new features

(Facebook/ClashofClans)"Clash of Clans" is rumored to release an update on Sept. 18.

Rumor has it that Supercell is planning to release a massive September update for "Clash of Clans" in an effort to re-establish its popularity among mobile players. The update will apparently boast an improved gaming experience, along with a handful of goodies like free gems.

A previous speculation pointed toward the reportedly imminent axing of the game due to the surge of users flocking to "Pokémon GO." The rumor sprouted and spread online following the Finnish studio's announcement to cancel ClashCon 2016. However, it looks like Supercell is ready to fight back.

According to reports, a new mode will be added to the game when the update is released. Originally, "Clash of Clans" has three modes: Single Player, Friendly Challenge, and Money Player. It is unknown what the new mode will be called or what it has to offer. Apart from that, improvements are also believed to have been made for the existing modes.

A change in how Town Hall benefits work is also expected. It should be noted that "Clash of Clans" only allows Town Hall access to players who have reached a certain level. This limitation has been acknowledged in the past. And it would seem that Supercell has heard the pleas because rumor has it that Town Halls will soon be accessible to all players.

The company is also following the reward system adopted by Niantic Labs with "Pokémon GO." Pokémon trainers are awarded certain items like eggs, potions and Pokeballs under specific circumstances. In the same way, "Clash of Clans" is also speculated to introduce a system that will give players free gems.

Of course, not everything in the update will be designed to make the game easier for players. There is also said to be a new penalty system that will be featured in the September update.

Right now, everything is still up in the air, including the update rollout period. However, the general assumption is that it will arrive on Sept. 18.
