'GTA 6' release date: Announcement in September at Sony event?

(Facebook/grandtheftautoV)"Grand Theft Auto 6" is the rumored successor of "Grand Theft Auto 5" (pictured).

Gamescom has come and gone, but the existence of "Grand Theft Auto 6" is still up in the air. However, many are expecting that the title may be revealed in the upcoming New York City event hosted by Sony in September.

According to previous reports, there was wide belief that Rockstar would be taking to Gamescom to unveil the next "Grand Theft Auto" installment. But the event passed and no new information was announced. It was undoubtedly a disappointment for many, but there may still be chance for a 2016 unveiling.

Heads have started turning toward the Sony event that will take place in the Big Apple this month. The event is said to focus on Sony's new console, the PlayStation Neo or PlayStation 4.5, but some fans are under the impression that Rockstar may be present as well. It should be noted that Sony and Rockstar have a history of partnering up, so an announcement by the latter at the former's event won't come as a surprise.

However, just because they are known for collaborating doesn't mean that a "GTA 6" unveiling is a guarantee. There's also the possibility of a different announcement taking place, perhaps having something to do wtih "Red Dead Redemption 2." But it's also entirely plausible that Rockstar won't be there at all.

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, previously revealed it has a handful of projects lined up. But seeing as the company did not expound on it, the news is open to interpretation. It could involve a new "GTA" game, a "Red Dead Redemption" sequel, or some other existing title, but it could also be something new altogether.

As for details surrounding "GTA 6," the location is still unknown at this time, with reports disagreeing on the exact setting. London is a popular rumor, but it could also be San Diego, Tokyo, or Las Venturas.

"Grand Theft Auto 6" is expected to hit the market between 2018 and 2020. But since these are only rumors, fans should take this news with caution.
