'Jurassic World 2' plot rumors, cast news: Toby Jones, Rafe Spall join roster; Jake Johnson won't return

(Facebook/JurassicPark)"Jurassic World 2" will begin production in early 2017.

Recent reports have shed light on the cast list for the upcoming sequel, "Jurassic World 2." Toby Jones and Rafe Spall are apparently being eyed for roles, while Jake Johnson has confirmed that he will not be returning.

According to Variety, Jones and Spall are in negotiations for parts in the film. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard have already confirmed to be reprising their roles as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing, respectively. Apart from that, two other major parts have yet to be cast or decided on.

Several main characters didn't make it out alive in the first film, but one particular fan-favorite has got everyone wondering if he's set to return. "New Girl" star Jake Johnson brought in a lot of laughs in "Jurassic World," but the actor himself has said that his character, Lowery, will not be back for part 2.

Responding to a fan question on Twitter, the actor replied, "From what I hear Lowery will not be in 'JW2.'"

Details about the upcoming film have been kept tightly under wraps, but production is apparently set to begin in early 2017. So far, it has been said that the sequel is going to be much "darker" and "scarier" compared to "Jurassic World."

"Obviously when you have Chris Pratt it will also be very funny. But it will be darker. It is a second step in a trilogy, and the second step is always dark as in 'The Empire Strikes Back' or the 'Wrath of Khan' which are the examples you always get," director J.A. Bayona said.

And while not a lot is known about the film's plot, Bayona did say that the sequel will offer up something that has never been done before in the franchise. He continued to say that unexpected and shocking things will take place in the sequel.

Executive producer Colin Trevorrow, who directed the first film, has also shared a few teasers about the sequel's plot. He said that it will be a "parable of the treatment animals receive today," which involves unethical experimentation, abuse, and the like.

"Jurassic World 2" will premiere on June 22, 2018.
