"Sherlock" season 4 is only a little over a month away, which means fans will finally see Benedict Cumberbatch back in action as the supersleuth himself.

Six new images from the upcoming season have been released and they provide a first look at what the series has in store for the crime-solving duo of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson (Martin Freeman). 

The first photo, seen on Entertainment Weekly, offers a particularly uncommon scene of a confused Sherlock as he looks at the new addition to their little, strange family: John and Mary's baby. Sherlock stands in the middle, with John and Mary (Amanda Abbington) on either side, as John carries their newborn child. It certainly is a change and their dynamic may also see a few alterations.

One photo features a top-view shot of Sherlock, John, Mary, their baby, and a dog as they film a scene. Other photos include Sherlock standing next to his brother, Mycroft (Mark Gatiss), as they stare intently into the camera, Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) looking quite concerned, Mycroft standing alone next to a large sign from The Cabinet Office, and a close-up shot of John looking directly into the camera.

The sixth photo gives fans a look at the villain of the fourth season, Culverton Smith, played by Toby Jones. He strikes a menacing look into the camera, and sports a perfectly coiffed hair and a sharp suit. 

And while the fourth season is something fans are looking forward to, there is also an increasing concern about the future of the series. No definite answer has been given in relation to whether there will be a fifth season, but Cumberbatch and the series creators are definitely open to continuing the series should time allow it.

Cumberbatch previously mentioned that there may be a bit of a break in between seasons 4 and 5, which is not unusual considering "Sherlock" seasons normally have two-year gaps in between. 

"Sherlock" season 4 will premiere on Jan. 1, 2017 on PBS Masterpiece.
