'True Detective' season 3 renewed? Hope is not lost as HBO reveals show 'is not dead'

(Facebook/TrueDetective)HBO programming president Casey Bloys reveals plans for "True Detective" season 3.

"True Detective" fans will be pleased to know that HBO has not filed the crime anthology series away just yet. Amid all the cancellation rumors, there may still be a glimmer of hope.

While speaking at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, HBO programming president Casey Bloys revealed among other things that "True Detective" is still very much part of their plan. "It is not dead," Bloys revealed, putting an end to the dreaded speculation of the show's end. "I talked to Nic about it and both Nic and HBO are open to another season."

Bloys further revealed that creator Nic Pizzolatto does not have anything in mind yet for a third season. However, there is also the option of having someone else write the story for season 3 and just having Pizzolatto supervise everything. This would undoubtedly be a workable setup since Pizzolatto is quite busy with other projects under his belt. Bloys admitted that "True Detective" is not something HBO wants to let go, saying, "It's a valuable franchise, it's not dead, we just don't have a take for a third season yet."

Rumors of its demise first started circulating when season 2 of the series was not as well-received as the first. Season 1 was praised for its story, direction, and acting, but season 2 was not as lucky, despite signing on several notable actors. With the second season's flop and no news of a third, people started guessing that HBO may have pulled the plug on the show altogether.

But with the assuring confirmation that a third season is definitely in the cards, fans now have renewed hope to cling onto. There's also the possibility of a season 1 actor coming back to reprise his role. It was previously reported that Matthew McConaughey, who played Rust Cohle in the first installation, has expressed his interest in bringing the character back to television.

At this point, only time will tell if "True Detective" ever gets a third season premiere.
