'True Detective' season 3 not likely as creator Nic Pizzolatto focuses on new project with Robert Downey Jr.

(Facebook/TrueDetective)"True Detective" season 3 may be put on hold as creator Nic Pizzolatto focuses on other projects.

There is no word yet on a third season renewal of Nic Pizzolatto's brainchild series "True Detective." However, it looks like the producer will have his hands full on a new HBO show starring Robert Downey Jr.

It is widely known that the fate of "True Detective" is still up in the air. Its first season landed really well and was received positively by both critics and viewers alike. However, its second season did not do as well and failed to meet expectations, which eventually led to speculation that the HBO series may have been axed altogether. It also didn't help when HBO assigned a new head of programming.

However, as it was previously reported, the new programming president Casey Bloys surprised everyone when he revealed that "True Detective" has not entirely been put to bed. "It is not dead," Bloys said of the popular crime drama. He also explained that Pizzolatto does not necessarily need to write and run the show — he can simply oversee everything.

And if the series does get renewed for another season, it looks like Bloys was spot on when he spoke of Pizzolatto's involvement because the "True Detective" creator is reportedly now attached to a different project under the same network. Sources have told Variety that Pizzolatto is set to write for the upcoming program and Downey Jr. is slated to star in it.

Detailed information about the project is currently under wraps, but it is believed that the show will be based on a "Perry Mason" reboot. It has been said that the "Iron Man" star has long been attached to the reboot, with Warner Bros. originally planning a feature film with Downey Jr. The project has been in the development stage for years, but it looks like it will finally come to fruition. Rather than a film, though, the project will be a television series.

Neither HBO nor representatives for Pizzolatto and Downey Jr. have confirmed this news.
