'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' season 4 news and spoilers: Ann Foley discusses the importance of costume and themes

(Facebook / Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)"Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" returned this Fall on ABC and includes Ghost Rider.

With the return of Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," there is a lot of excitement for what is to come since the show introduced a new character to spice up the story.

After months of waiting, fans finally got to meet Ghost Rider, who is played by Robbie Reyes. Though there is not a lot of material on the Marvel character, viewers are looking forward to see what he could present to the series.  The previous episode of the season 4 showed his introduction, making a dramatic entrance with his flaming skull face.

With such an intriguing look for Ghost Rider, the costume designer of the series, Ann Foley, was able to delve deeper into what the upcoming season could bring.

In an interview with Forbes, Foley explained that there is more to costumes and makeup than meets the eye. She stated that it helps create the character, making them fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She expressed her enthusiasm with regard to working with Marvel as it allows her to watch the characters develop.

She tells Forbes: "You've gotten to see these characters grow, emotionally. And I get to show that emotional progression through their clothes. I get to tell their stories through their clothes, whether it's the civilian clothes or their superhero costumes."

In addition, Foley is expected to reflect the dark themes that have been incorporated into the storylines. She explained that they are able to play with the colors to push the themes further.

In the same Forbes interview, she said, "When we started in season one, we had a much lighter tone, much more patterns. But things have progressed, they've changed, especially season two, with the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. The show took a definite change at that point and things got darker. We stripped away a bit of color, things got more serious. You really saw it in season 3."

Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." season 4 airs every Tuesday night, 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
