Apple Watch vs. Moto 360 2: Second generation Moto 360 wins over smartwatch users

Last year, the Moto 360 was the most popular Android Wear smartwatch, and it has managed to stick around in spite of the onslaught brought about by the new smartwatch from Apple. Now, with the second generation device launching, it is time to compare the Moto 360 2 to the Apple Watch.

Design

The Apple Watch, which is rectangular in shape, comes in two sizes. The 38 mm version is aimed at women and the bigger 42 mm version at men. They come in black, space gray, silver, yellow gold and rose gold. As for the materials used in the build of the device, they vary according to the line. The cheapest, the Apple Watch sport, is created from anodized aluminum, while its mid range Apple Watch is made from stainless steel. Its costliest version, called the Apple Watch Edition, comes in solid gold. There are several straps to choose from and they are created from stainless steel, leather and Fluoroelastomer. In terms of water and dust proofing, the device has an IPX7 rating but it cannot be used while in the shower or swimming.

The Moto 360 2 has two sizes for men, a smaller size for women and a sports model, which will be available next year. The two models for men measure 42 mm and 46 mm and the one for women measures 42 mm. As for the body of the device, it is round and crafted from stainless steel. As for the colors, it is offered in silver, black, gold and rose gold. Straps differ according to the size of the body but Motorola offers varieties created from stainless steel and leather. When it comes to waterproofing and dust proofing, the device has an IP67 rating, but like the Apple watch, it cannot be used for swimming.

Comparing their operating systems, the Apple Watch, which runs Watch OS, is only compatible with iOS devices, while the Moto 360 2 runs Android Wear and can be used with compatible versions of Android and iOS.

Display

There is an LCD screen on the Moto 360 2 and its bigger model has a 1.56-inch version with a resolution of 360 x 330 pixels while the smaller model has a 1.37-inch version with a resolution of 360 x 325 pixels. Importantly, the "flat tire," the cut out portion at the bottom of its screen is still present, therefore the face is not completely round. As for the Apple Watch, it has an OLED display and its smaller model comes with a 1.32-inch version with a resolution of 272 x 340 pixels, while its bigger model measures 1.5 inches and has a resolution of 312 x 390 pixels.

Specs

There is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset on the Moto 360 2, which comes with a quad-core CPU clocked at 1.2 GHz, 4 GB of storage and 512 MB of RAM. As for the Apple Watch, it has 8 GB of storage and comes with the S1 system on chip.

Sensors

The Moto 360 2 has an accelerometer, gyroscope, haptics engine and optical heart rate monitor while the Apple Watch comes with a heart rate sensor accelerometer and gyroscope.

Price

The Moto 360 2 has a starting price tag of $299.99 and goes as high as $429.99 while the cheapest Apple Watch costs $350 and its solid gold model can cost up to $17,000.
