Season 3 of Disney's hit coming-of-age series "Girl Meets World" returns later this spring. Riley, Maya, and their classmates have finally graduated from middle school and are set to enter the much more complicated world of high school.

"Girl Meets World" has continually been praised for its ability to tell very relevant and compelling storylines. According to creator and showrunner Michael Jacobs, the third season will continue to give its young viewers an honest look at what life is really like for teenagers in high school.

"What we're trying to do is give you very intriguing and compelling episodes, but never breaking the thread of truth. Yes, this honestly happens in high school. I think high school is the most confusing, awful, terrible and ultimately – if you do it right – wonderful springboard into college and the rest of your life," Jacobs told TheWrap.

The upcoming season is also expected to finally bring a resolution to the love triangle between Riley, Maya, and Lucas. When Lucas finally ends up with either Riley or Maya, the show plans to explore the relationship and what may come next. While Disney has been accommodating the heavier and more boundary-pushing episodes of "Girl Meets World," Jacobs is still mindful of the show's demographics.

"We will tackle heavier subjects, and we will explore them, but we will also honor the fact that our demographic starts at 6 years old," he explained.

As season 3 of "Girl Meets World" will see a very big shift in terms of tone and content, some fans have started a petition asking for the show to be moved to Freeform, the channel formerly known as ABC Family.

According to the Change.org petition, if "Girl Meets World" moves to Freeform, it will face fewer restrictions as compared to Disney. They also claim that this move will help the show reach its full potential. The petition also claims that Disney may choose to cancel "Girl Meets World" when its mature storylines no longer fit in with the channel's young viewers. Currently, the petition has already collected over 4,000 supporters.

While Disney has yet to address the fans' petition, the petition demonstrates how much effect "Girl Meets World" has on its teenage viewers.
