Google Nexus 7 release date: Updated tablet launching at Google I/O 2016?

(Asus)Could the new Nexus 7 tablet be unveiled later today?

Google is rumored to soon update its Nexus lineup with the new Nexus 7 tablet. The latest reports suggest that the Nexus 7 (2016) will be unveiled at the Google I/O conference taking place from May 18 to 22. With less than a day to go before the event, tech enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating its (hopefully) imminent release.

According to reports, two Chinese companies are rumored to handle production of the new Nexus tablet. Taiwan-based Asus previously released the first- and second-generation Nexus 7 tablets and may do so again with the 2016 model. On the other hand, China-based Huawei has reportedly impressed Google with the recently released Nexus 6P smartphone. Could they take over production of the Nexus 7?

On the other hand, there are also other sources claiming that Google may want to take over production duties, just like what it did with the Google Pixel C tablet.

The Nexus tablet comes with a 7-inch display. Rumored specs include a Full HD screen resolution, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, and a 3,000 mAh battery. To compete with other tablets in the market, the Nexus 7 may come with either 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM. Storage options could be increased to 32 GB and 64 GB. The microSD card slot is also rumored to support up to 2 TB of expanded memory. The Nexus 7 will launch as a midrange tablet with an affordable price tag.

Google is expected to unveil some of its newest products and technologies during the I/O 2016. Many believe that the new Android N OS will also be introduced today. If that is the case, then the Nexus 7 tablet will likely be preloaded with the new OS when released.

Unfortunately, Google has not yet released an official statement regarding the Nexus 7 tablet. Therefore, readers are advised to take these reports with a grain of salt.

To see whether Google makes a Nexus 7 announcement, be sure to check out the Keynote from Google CEO Sundar Pichai later today at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET. The event will be streamed live on Google.
