iPhone 6 vs. Galaxy S5: premium iPhone 6 wins, although the Galaxy S5 has some great features

The iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S5 are among the best smartphones often compared to each other by customers looking to buy smartphones. Here is how last year's flagship smartphone from Samsung, stands up to the Apple smartphone in comparison.

Design

The design of the iPhone 6 incorporates premium elements like a metal unibody and beautifully curved edges. It comes in cool colors like silver, gold and space grey. As for the Galaxy S5, it has a plastic body and uses faux leather on its back panel lined with dimples. Even though this combination of materials allows the smartphone to be easily held, it does not have a premium look that the iPhone 6 offers. However, both devices have fingerprint scanners with the Galaxy S5 having a swipe-based scanner and the iPhone with a touch-based scanner.

Display

The display is where the Galaxy S5 sprints ahead as it has a bigger and sharper super AMOLED screen measuring 5.1 inches with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a density of 432 pixels per inch. The iPhone 6, on the other hand, has a smaller IPS LCD screen measuring 4.7 inches with a resolution of 750 x 1334 pixels and a density of 326 pixels per inch.

Specs

The specs of both devices are fairly equal. The Galaxy S5 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, a Krait 400 CPU with four cores clocked at 2.5 GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU. As for the iPhone 6, it has an Apple A8 chipset, a Cyclone CPU with two cores clocked at 1.4 GHz and a PowerVR GX6450 GPU.

Memory

The Galaxy S5 gains another edge over the iPhone 6 as it comes with a memory slot that allows for the expansion of up to 128 GB of external storage. As for RAM, the iPhone 6 has 1 GB while the Galaxy S5 has 2 GB.

Camera

The iPhone has an 8 megapixel camera while the Galaxy S5 has a 16 megapixel camera. Both devices do not have optical image stabilization.

Price

The 16 GB iPhone 6 is priced at $199 with a two-year contract, while the Galaxy S5 has a price tag of $99 with a similar contract.
